Type 1 Diabetes

This kind of diabetes usually presents in childhood, but there are forms there is a form that can present in adulthood called latent adult diabetes type 1 of adulthood (LADA). This is an autoimmune condition that destroys the cells in the pancreas that produce insulin. 

• Symptoms-see main Diabetes page. Additional symptoms of type 1 diabetes can include weight loss, muscle wasting, extreme dehydration, susceptibility to infection, and in severe cases coma.
• Diagnosis-in addition to criteria for any diabetes, certain tests to confirm the autoummune case and body’s production of insulin can be done
• Treatment-since the cause of type 1 diabetes is deficiency or absence of insulin, the primary treatment is replacement of insulin. Insulin is an injection under the skin you will be trained to give yourself. This will come in the form of:
  • Long-acting form of insulin to control your fasting blood sugar
  • Short-acting insulin to control your blood sugar after meals. Mealtime insulin in either injectable or inhaled versions.
