About Us

Contra Costa Sleep Center is dedicated to providing high quality sleep medicine to the community.

For Physicians

We offer the expertise, professionalism and responsiveness to ensure that your patients receive the best possible care.

To our valued patients:

Contra Costa Sleep Center is open for both In-Lab and Home testing starting May 3.

Our Professional Medical Employees work diligently to sanitize the Sleep Center and all testing equipment to standards above that of most medical facilities. We have doubled efforts to help prevent the spread of Coronavirus. Our goal is to protect our patients and employees by following the latest recommendations by the state of California and the Center for Disease Control (CDC). We have always followed the protocol that patients should reschedule if ill, and technicians should not report to work if ill.

We have increased our cleaning practices to include sanitizing doorknobs and anything else touched by patients, and have provided extra sanitation in the restrooms. Our employees have been advised to frequently wash their hands carefully, and avoid touching their face.

Your sleep test is conducted in a private bedroom with a 2:1 patient to technician ratio. There are no “crowds” in the Sleep Center. You will only have contact with the technician assisting in your sleep study.

Who we help…

Most patients referred to a sleep center are being evaluated for the diagnosis and treatment of sleep apnea. Therefore, the procedure is performed in this fashion unless stated otherwise by your physician.

Home Sleep Testing

During a diagnostic sleep study, many types of data are recorded. When you come in for your appointment for the pickup of the equipment, a technician will explain how to use the device and you will then take it home. A small sensor will be applied near your nose and mouth to monitor airflow. Respiratory effort belts will be attached around your chest and abdomen. An Oximeter sensor will be taped onto one of your fingers to measure blood oxygen saturations levels. These monitoring devices are used to ensure an accurate evaluation of your sleep. Your movement will not be restrained; so, for example, if you need to go to the restroom or reach for a glass of water, you will be free to do so. You will wear the device for 1 night and then return the equipment to the facility.

Once the equipment is returned to the center your data will be compiled and downloaded. Later, a Sleep Technologist will review (hand-score) your study, page-by-page, and then send the results to an interpreting physician. The final report will be provided to your physician.

Results are generally ready 5-10 business days after your study is completed. You will want to make sure you set up a follow up appointment with your physician to go over your results.

Home sleep testing may be used as an alternative to polysomnography (PSG) for the diagnosis of OSA in patients with a high pretest probability of moderate to severe OSA. In some cases, health insurance companies will only authorize home sleep testing instead of attended studies, as it is less expensive.

Home sleep testing must be ordered or order must be reviewed by one of Contra Costa Sleep Center’s physicians after clinical evaluation of patient.

  • Home testing is not appropriate for the diagnosis of OSA in patients with significant co-morbid conditions that may decrease the accuracy of the portable monitoring.
    1. Patients with co-morbid conditions such as pulmonary disease or heart disease.
    2. Patients suspected of having co-morbid sleep disorders.
    3. Low pretest probability of moderate to severe OSA.
    4. Patient not capable of complying with an unattended sleep study.
  • Home testing is not appropriate for general screening of asymptomatic patients.
  • Home testing may be indicated for the diagnosis of OSA in patients for whom in-laboratory PSG is not possible by virtue of immobility, safety, or critical illness.
  • Home testing may also be indicated to monitor the response to non-CPAP treatments for OSA.
  • A follow-up visit to review test results should be performed for all patients undergoing home sleep testing by referring physician. The report includes a recommendation for a Sleep Medicine consultation.
  • Negative or technically inadequate home study tests in patients with a high pretest probability of moderate to severe OSA should prompt in-laboratory polysomnography.

For Physicians

In detail
As one of the largest Sleep Centers in Northern California, Contra Costa Sleep Center offers the expertise, professionalism and responsiveness to ensure that your patients receive the best possible care for any sleep disorder.

Our Medical Staff has perhaps the largest number of Board Certified Sleep Physicians in the private setting.

Our Center can serve your needs as follows:

A simple testing facility, where we provide an interpretation of the sleep study, along with specific recommendations for appropriate therapy.

Or, if you choose, we will see your patient in consultation, arrange for the study, and also arrange for follow-up visits in order to monitor appropriate therapy such as CPAP compliance.

We provide a full range of studies for sleep disorders, and can arrange for our affiliated staff members to provide a sleep dentistry consult.

WHAT WE ARE NOT:

  • We are not a chain.
  • We are not simply a testing Lab, without on site physicians.
  • We are not affiliated with testing labs with multiple sites in the Bay area.

WHAT WE ARE:

We are a nationally Accredited Sleep Center, serving the John Muir /Mt Diablo service area.

A benefit of the working with the Contra Costa Sleep Center is that our friendly staff is always available to assist you, your staff or your patient. We are a 24/7 facility, open during the day, as well as the evening.

Test results are expeditiously provided in an easy to read and understandable format.

Our Center is easy to find, and provides ample safe parking. Since the study is usually just one night, the “drive” to Walnut Creek should not be burdensome.

If you ever have any questions regarding Sleep Medicine or our Sleep Center, would like either a phone call or a personal visit to your office to discuss sleep testing, please call us directly at the Sleep Center. Our Staff Physicians, will promptly respond to your call.

What we provide

Sleep Study Procedure

Most patients referred to a sleep center are being evaluated for the diagnosis and treatment of sleep apnea. Therefore, the procedure is performed in this fashion unless stated otherwise by your physician.

You are greeted by a medically trained greeter, who assists in completing paperwork. Then you are given a tour of the facility, escorted to the study bedroom, and introduced to the technician who will administer the testing.

You are asked to complete a questionnaire and then witness a video regarding sleep apnea. If you feel that you will have difficulty falling asleep, and in accord with the policy of the sleep center, you will be offered a sleeping pill (Ambien). This will not affect your sleep study. In the morning you and the technologist will discuss your readiness to drive home.

You are introduced to a comfortable fitting mask – this is to determine the optimal fit if, in case, CPAP is indicated.

Electrodes are applied in order to monitor the following:

Brain waves

Nasal airflow

Leg movements

Eye movements

Abdominal and chest movements

Oxygen level

Chin muscle tone

EKG (heart)

Body position

1-2 hours of data are collected while you are sleeping. If there is sufficient evidence for sleep apnea, you will be awakened and asked to put on your CPAP mask. You then return to sleep and the technician remotely titrates the pressure introduced through the mask in order to eliminate apneas and snoring.

Data is collected for another 4 hours while you are on CPAP. At the conclusion of the study, we will be able to recommend the optimal pressure setting that eliminates apneas and snoring. The study usually ends after 6 hours. Every 30 seconds of the study is analyzed and data is tabulated. The data is then forwarded to the interpreting physician, who is a Board Certified Sleep Specialist.

The report is finalized and mailed to the ordering physician, to your Primary Care Physician if requested, and to you if you have completed the self-addressed envelope to receive the report.
